Concha y Toro "Don Melchor" Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Named after the man who planted Chile's first serious Bordeaux vines in 1883 — and still busy proving his instincts right, well over a century later.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a single vineyard in Puente Alto, upper Maipo Valley, planted on iron-rich alluvial clay and rounded stones at the foot of the Andes. This eastern edge of Maipo sits closer to the mountains than anywhere else in the valley, and the cooling night air that rolls down off the Andes keeps acidity and tannin structure intact even as the fruit ripens fully under Chile's relentless summer sun — the reason Puente Alto Cabernet tends to read more mineral and structured than fruit from the warmer valley floor.
Taste Profile: Blackcurrant, black cherry and violets up front, layered with graphite, cedar and a savoury dried-herb edge that comes from the site rather than the barrel. The palate is dense but not heavy — firm, fine-grained tannins carry it through a long, mineral-streaked finish. Built to age, but already showing why Puente Alto earned its reputation.
Winemaking Process: Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted by parcel, with each block fermented and pressed separately before the final blend is assembled — a level of granularity that lets the winemaking team read the vineyard almost row by row. Ageing runs around 16 to 18 months in French oak, a mix of new and once-used barrels chosen so the wood supports the fruit rather than dominating it.
Winemaker: Enrique Tirado has been Don Melchor's head winemaker since 1999. An agronomist trained at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, he joined Concha y Toro in 1993 and has spent the decades since walking the same rows of vines the company has owned in Puente Alto for over a century. In 2019, Don Melchor was spun off as its own standalone winery within the Concha y Toro group, with Tirado stepping up as CEO and Technical Director — the same obsessive, parcel-by-parcel attention to Puente Alto's terroir, just with his name properly on the door.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
