Château Calon Ségur Saint-Estèphe 2010 — 1.5L Magnum
The estate whose 18th-century owner also owned Lafite and Latour, yet declared his heart belonged here — and put a heart on the label to prove it.
Grape Varietals & Region: 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot from Saint-Estèphe, a Third Classified Growth in 1855. A thick layer of gravel laid down during the Quaternary Period sits over predominantly clay subsoil from the Tertiary Period, with a fine lacustrine clay layer at the summit of the gravel deposits.
Taste Profile: The style is carried by a Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses its finesse without arrogance. Elegance shows up everywhere — in the purity of the wine's flavours, the delicacy of its texture — while its depth and length are equally impressive. The wine's extraordinary ability to age for decades in bottle is one of the estate's defining features.
Winemaking Process: Hand-picked, with a first selection made on the vine. Grapes are then sorted mechanically by vibration, followed by a hand sort. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tronconical stainless-steel tanks, with an 18 to 21 day vatting period, microbubbling, and co-inoculation with exogenous yeast and bacteria in stainless steel at 25°C. The wine then ages 20 months in 100% new barrels, fined with egg white.
Winemaker: Calon Ségur takes its second name from the Marquis de Ségur, who inherited the estate through marriage in the early 18th century and, despite also owning Lafite and Latour, was said to have declared “my heart belongs to Calon” — the origin of the heart that's marked the label ever since. The modern era began in 1894, when Georges Gasqueton and Charles Hanappier bought the estate; the Gasqueton family ran it for generations after, right up until Denise Gasqueton's death on the first day of the 2012 harvest, after which it passed to the French insurer Suravenir. This 2010 was made under her watch — one of the last vintages of the family era that built Calon Ségur's reputation for wines that age as gracefully as they age slowly.

Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
