Fibreglass Tank Based Wines
Fiberglass tanks became popular in winemaking during the mid-20th century as a lightweight and cost-effective alternative to oak barrels, concrete tanks, and stainless steel. Made from glass-reinforced plastic, they are highly durable, easy to clean, and resistant to corrosion. While not as widely used in premium winemaking as other materials, fiberglass tanks are commonly found in bulk production and for storing or fermenting wines in smaller wineries.
Fiberglass tanks, like stainless steel, are neutral vessels that do not impart any flavors to the wine. They are favored for producing clean, fruit-forward wines. They lack the oxygen permeability of concrete or the precise temperature control of stainless steel, making the use of fiberglass tanks consistent with the minimalist approach of natural winemakers. They don’t interfere with the wine’s natural development, unlike oak barrels, which add flavor, or stainless steel, which can feel overly industrial for some
