Encruzado
Encruzado is a native white grape variety of Portugal, specifically from the Dão region, which is known for its production of high-quality wines. It is one of the most important white grape varieties in Portugal, with a reputation for producing elegant and complex wines.
Taste Profile: Encruzado wines are known for their complexity and balance. They often display aromas of citrus, white flowers, and orchard fruits like apples and pears, with subtle herbal and mineral undertones. On the palate, these wines tend to be medium- to full-bodied with a refreshing acidity. With age or when oak-aged, Encruzado develops richer flavors, including notes of hazelnuts, vanilla, and sometimes even hints of honey or wax.
Regional Styles: Encruzado shines in the Dão region, where it is often produced in two distinct styles: unoaked and oaked. Unoaked Encruzado showcases fresh, vibrant fruit with a clean, crisp finish, while oaked versions gain additional complexity and richness, with layers of creaminess and toasted spice from barrel aging. The grape is also blended with other Portuguese white varieties, but many winemakers are choosing to make single-varietal wines to highlight its unique characteristics.
Despite being a white grape, Encruzado has an exceptional ability to age, allowing well-made examples to develop beautifully in the bottle for up to 10 years, a trait not commonly found in many white wine varieties.
