Alheit Vineyards 'Cartology' Bush Vines 2021
A husband-and-wife project that farms only white grapes, chasing the Cape's oldest, most scattered vineyards.
Grape Varietals & Region: 93% Chenin Blanc and 7% Sémillon, from rare dry-farmed bush vine parcels scattered across the Western Cape, South Africa — Chenin from Skurfberg, Perdeberg, Upper Blaauwklippen, False Bay and Tygerberg, and Sémillon from the old La Colline block in Franschhoek. Most vines are 40 to 50 years old, with a minimum age of thirty, farmed at tiny yields of around 3 tons per hectare.
Taste Profile: A pale gold colour, alive and bright. The nose shows citrus oil and pear with subtle floral and honey tones. Very well proportioned on the palate, with firm mid-palate structure, a medium-rich mouthfeel and long carry — flavour persists and even intensifies through the finish, which turns dry, saline and thirst-quenching.
Winemaking Process: Grapes are hand-sorted and whole-bunch pressed, with the juice left very lightly settled and cloudy, no additions made to the raw juice. Wild fermentation takes place in cement eggs, clay pots, foudres or old barrels of various sizes, lasting anywhere from three weeks to eleven months. The wine rests on lees for around twelve months, then a further six months on fine lees without fining before bottling.
Winemaker: Alheit Vineyards was started in 2010 by husband and wife Chris and Suzaan Alheit, who moved to Hemelrand Farm near Hermanus with the ambition of unlocking the potential of South Africa's old Chenin Blanc and Sémillon vineyards. They released their first vintage of Cartology in 2011, working exclusively with white grapes and sourcing from a network of old-vine parcels stretching from the Citrusdal Mountain in the north to the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge in the south — some vineyards more than five hours' drive from the cellar.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
