Côdega do Larinho
Côdega do Larinho is sometimes overshadowed by its more famous blending partners but is increasingly being celebrated in single-varietal wines for its crisp, aromatic qualities.
Varietal Origin: Côdega do Larinho is an indigenous grape from Portugal, primarily grown in the Douro and Trás-os-Montes regions. Historically, it was used in blends for white wines, but in recent years it has been increasingly vinified as a standalone variety due to its unique aromatic potential.
Typical Taste Profile: Côdega do Larinho produces aromatic wines with a light and crisp profile. The typical flavors include citrus fruits like lemon and lime, alongside green apple, and occasional notes of white flowers and herbs. It also shows fresh acidity and can develop subtle mineral undertones, contributing to its appeal in both fresh, unoaked styles and fuller, more complex versions.
Regional Styles:
Douro Valley (Portugal): In the Douro, Côdega do Larinho is often blended with other indigenous white grapes like Viosinho and Rabigato to make rich, structured white wines with aromatic complexity. When vinified on its own, it is celebrated for its freshness, light body, and zesty acidity.
Trás-os-Montes (Portugal): This region's higher altitudes bring out the grape's acidity and floral character, leading to very fresh and elegant wines. In single-varietal expressions, the wine tends to have more pronounced citrus and mineral notes, ideal for crisp, refreshing wines.
