Oxer Suzzane DO Rioja 2023
Named after Leonard Cohen's song for a woman, from a vineyard planted in 1903 that gives up barely any fruit at all.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Garnacha from a 3-hectare vineyard in Cárdenas, Rioja Alta, planted in 1903 at 580 metres altitude on iron-rich clay with over 10% rock content, yielding just 2,000 kg per hectare. The various parcels that make up this old vineyard show small differences between them that add extra layers of complexity to the finished wine.
Taste Profile: A very elegant wine: seductive, velvet texture balanced by juicy acidity and softly gripping tannins. Flavours of red cherry, bramble and plum, sweet spice like cinnamon and cacao, tobacco and violets, building to a concentrated, complex finish.
Winemaking Process: Fermentation takes place in 500-litre used French oak barrels and concrete egg using indigenous yeasts. The wine ages approximately 12 months in the same 500-litre French oak barrels and concrete egg, then is bottled unfiltered.
Winemaker: Suzzane takes its name from Leonard Cohen's song Suzanne, and its back label carries a quote from Eduardo Galeano on the endless cycle of birth and renewal — a fitting tribute to a 1903 vineyard that keeps producing at a fraction of modern yields. It's part of Oxer Bastegieta's broader project of tracking down century-old, low-yielding Rioja Alta plots and giving them the patient, minimal-intervention winemaking he thinks they deserve.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
