David Herd built Marlborough's first commercial wine cellar right here in 1892 — the Cowley family are just the latest guardians of that ground.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Auntsfield Estate vineyard in Marlborough's Southern Valleys — a cooler, drier sub-region prized for riper, more textural styles thanks to its mix of high-mineral Greywacke rock and old, low-fertility Loess clay soils. The 65-hectare estate is also planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and unusually for Marlborough, Pinot Noir is actually its most-planted variety.
Taste Profile: Pale straw. Intense aromas of passionfruit, gooseberry and cantaloupe melon with hints of lime and white peach, layered with dried herbs, lemongrass, mandarin and blackcurrant for extra pungency. Powerful, tight and elegant, with a generous, concentrated mouthfeel balanced by underlying minerality and taut structure.
Winemaking Process: A portion of the fruit was cool-fermented with cultured yeast in stainless steel tanks; another portion was hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and fermented in seasoned oak barrels — the two lots later blended together.
Winemaker: David Herd arrived in New Zealand in 1854 and, while everyone around him thought sheep, planted Marlborough's first grapes at Auntsfield in 1892, building the region's first commercial wine cellar and making wine here until his death in 1905. The Cowley family bought the property in 1998; brothers Luc and Ben Cowley now serve as Winemaker and Viticulturist, farming varietals that share ancestry with Herd's original plantings.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
