High on a hill in Tuscany, not far from Siena and Perugia, rises the historic town Cortona. On one side it is flanked by an open plain, and on the other is the hill and village. One can enjoy the view of this captivating panorama from the Santa Cristina winery, which came into existence in 2006 with the goal of acknowledging and renewing traditions, over 70 years after its first vintage produced in 1946.
Over time, Santa Cristina has become a reference point for winemaking experts, connoisseurs and wine enthusiasts alike due to their commitment to achieving quality. Diligent care and attention to the work in both the vineyards and cellars have been a stimulus for constant innovation and research in exploring indigenous as well as international grape varieties.
The resulting family of wines are different yet highly distinguishable for their unmistakable artisanal style, proof of the enduring connection between the vineyards, terroir and human respect for the land. Just like a good story, Santa Cristina never gets old.
The origins of Cortona date back to very ancient times. It was one of the most influential Etruscan settlements of its time, written about by many Greek and Latin authors. The city of Cortona developed exponentially between the seventh and eight centuries B.C., dominating the Chiana valley. From its altitude of 585 metres above sea level, Cortona faces the vast and harmonious landscape of the Valdichiana, dotted with villas and farmhouses amongst the carefully arranged vineyards, and witness to its ancient history of producing special wines. The territory is characterized by sandstone, shale and marl, with the presence of fluvial-lacustrine deposits, clay and scree. The composition of this land is only slightly calcareous and offers an excellent balance with respect to its varying makeup of clay, silt and coarse, fine sand. Santa Cristina has always been identified with this land and with the characteristic varietals of this area.
Santa Cristina’s wine cellars, designed by Hydea studio in Florence, has a modern architectural structure built according to the minimum environmental impact, respecting the surrounding landscape. The construction began in 2004 and was completed in 2006.
