Villa Sparina Barbera del Monferrato DOC 2023
A juicy, everyday red from the family that put Gavi on the world map.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Barbera, from vines planted in 1945 on Villa Sparina's Piedmont estate. The vineyard is mainly south, south-west facing, at 250–300m altitude, on a clay and marl soilbed, with the Mediterranean-tempered climate of the Gavi zone bringing complete, even ripening. Barbera is Piedmont's great workhorse red — less prestigious than the region's Nebbiolo, but often the wine growers reach for themselves, prized for the savoury minerality and remarkable longevity old vines like these can bring to what's usually a simple, food-friendly grape.
Taste Profile: Bright ruby red in colour with a fine, violet- and berry-scented perfume. Packs a juicy punch of raspberry and dark berries, full-bodied with soft, supple tannins and a refreshing burst of controlled acidity through a persistent finish. A great all-rounder red, best paired with beef ragu or spicy sausages.
Winemaking Process: Hand-harvested in mid-October. Soft crushing of the grapes with two weeks' fermentation at a controlled 27°C in stainless steel tanks, then partial ageing in oak barrels within the estate's 18th-century cellars.
Winemaker: Mario and Bruna Moccagatta bought the Villa Sparina estate in the early 1970s and brought in their first harvest in 1974; their children Stefano, Tiziana and Massimo have since expanded it into one of Gavi's most celebrated producers — a family operation that treats Barbera, its everyday red, with the same care as its flagship Gavi whites.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
