Savoury, rich Pinot Noir that carries the smokey elegance of a traditionalist approach.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) from old vines in the Walkenberg, Rheingau.
Taste Profile: Extremely deep, dark cherry in colour. Sour cherry and black cherry show an almost oppressive intensity, with grandiose density that stays ultra-fine — the mouth vibrates with tension, running from intense sour cherry to sweet cherry to a touch of blackberry, over brilliant minerals and great salinity. Extremely alive; more like a Pinot Noir from the high altitudes of Burgundy — a slim Corton, even — than a typical Rheingau red, both in its darkness and its dark-cherry finesse.
Winemaking Process: After fermentation in wooden barrels, Becker's Pinots rest in large old wooden barrels — no barriques — for two full years. A first small addition of sulfur comes after malolactic fermentation completes, around the one-year mark, with a further low dose set shortly before bottling. The wine's deep colour and finely polished, substantial tannin and extract owe as much to organic viticulture and strict yield restriction as to mash fermentation under high pressure — over four bar of CO2, released explosively to rupture the skins, the same principle behind decompression sickness in diving. After fermentation, the wine rests on the mash in the pressure tank for up to three weeks, is pressed at low pressure, and ages two to three years in large wooden barrels before bottling. Fully destemmed.
Winemaker: The winery is run by third-generation grower and winemaker Hans-Joseph "Hajo" Becker, a traditionalist among Rheingau producers with no successor currently in line. His 13 hectares sit entirely within the Walkenberg — a classified VDP.Grosse Lage site — planted 75% to Riesling and a growing 25% to Pinot Noir. Even as the Rheingau converted en masse to trocken styles, Becker held to older practices: preserving old vines and massal selections over clones, and farming organically without ever advertising it. Annual production runs to about 45,000 bottles, and the wines remain sought after by sommeliers and critics for a style unlike any other producer in the Rheingau.

Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
