Grape Varietals & Region: The name Sonnenberg speaks for itself: 95% of the vineyard sits on steep slopes facing due south, among the best-positioned sites for Pinot Noir anywhere on the Ahr. At 100–150m above sea level in Bad Neuenahr, the site's southern orientation and favourable slope give it exceptional solar radiation and a microclimate that scientific studies have shown to be the warmest spot in the entire Ahr valley. The soil is a skeletal-rich mix of greywacke and greywacke slate with loam, hanging loam, loess and loess loam — visible in an almost five-metre-high exposed edge lower down the slope. That stone content keeps the resulting Pinot Noir, though massive and voluminous, fruity and elegant rather than heavy.
Taste Profile: A complex wine with earthy, herbal and pronounced fruity aromas — dark and red berries, a touch of cherry, pepper and malt, meeting fine acidity and clear minerality in a full-bodied wine. Fine tannins, good substance and persistence on the palate, closing on a juicy, mineral finish.
Winemaking Process: Built on old vines, sustainable vineyard work, deliberate yield reduction (around 30hl/ha) and careful hand-picking. Grapes are gently transported to the winery in small boxes for spontaneous fermentation, with 20 days' maceration on the mash, ageing in barrique (70% new oak) on the fine lees for 18 months, then 6 months in bottle before an unfiltered release.
Winemaker: The estate's name traces back to the 1950 marriage of grandparents Paula Meyer and Willibald Näkel, who farmed just 1.5 hectares but made a name for themselves with Willibald's dry red wines — genuinely pioneering at a time when German wine was almost always sweet. Werner Näkel took over in the 1980s and became one of Germany's most important vintners; today the estate is run by third-generation sisters Meike and Dörte, alongside parents Werner and Claudia, bringing a fresh take to the Ahr Valley's slate soils and Pinot Noir.

Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
