Werner Näkel worked as a winemaker in both Portugal and South Africa. Back in 1996, after his first trip to the Cape, he decided to make wine there as well. His daughters continuing this tradition with enthusiasm today – not least as a welcome excuse to escape the German winter every now and then.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Shiraz originating from the "Lorraine" estate in Stellenbosch, whose centerpiece is an old Cape Dutch house amidst impressive vineyards. Located near the Atlantic Ocean, the vineyards benefit from a more temperate climate in otherwise hot South Africa.
Taste Profile: This very full-bodied Shiraz, characterized by ripe red fruits and spices, has a velvety, expressive tannin structure. It features plum, blackberry, dark cherry, blueberry, and more. This is underscored by subtle spices from cloves, cinnamon, and vanilla. It presents itself as very juicy and full-bodied with pleasantly round, full tannins.
Winemaking Process: The wine was fermented on the skins for 14 days, followed by malolactic fermentation and 12 months of ageing in used barriques.

The name of the wine estate goes back to the marriage of grandparents Paula Meyer and Willibald Näkel in 1950. Like many wineries in the Ahr, Meyer-Näkel focuses mainly on Pinot Noir (or as it’s known locally, Spätburgunder).

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
