Shannon Mount Bullet Merlot 2020
Five clones, five picking dates, one small Elgin Valley vineyard farmed with barely any intervention.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Merlot from a small 3-hectare vineyard in the Elgin Valley, South Africa, divided into five parcels each planted with its own clone. Soil, trellising and canopy management stay constant across the vineyard, so it's clonal character alone that spreads the harvest dates as much as 11-14 days apart.
Taste Profile: A fragrance of ripe red fruits like plums and dark cherries, layered with earthy complexity and a thread of minerality. Good acidity gives outstanding freshness alongside a well-integrated, ripe and seductive tannin structure.
Winemaking Process: Bunches are chilled to 3°C before sorting on a conveyor and destemming, then hand sorted before cold maceration for 3-6 days at 8°C. Each parcel is naturally fermented at 26-30°C with only two punch-downs daily to preserve silkiness and elegance. After pressing, the wine completes malolactic fermentation and matures for around 20 months in 225L barriques from three Bordeaux cooperages, using tighter-grain, medium-toasted oak.
Winemaker: Shannon Vineyards was established when the Downes family bought their Elgin Valley property in 1997, with James Downes returning from a career as a marine biologist in Scotland to help convert it into a working farm. James now manages the vineyard while his brother Stuart runs marketing worldwide, together building a reputation for minimal-intervention winemaking in one of South Africa's coolest wine regions.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
