Old Road Grand Mère Old Vine Sémillon 2021
An elegant and graceful grandmother — Grand Mère shows the same grace and tenacity as a family matriarch.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Sémillon from a single 80-year-old bush-vine vineyard planted in 1936, in Franschhoek, South Africa. The south-east-facing site sits at 350 metres altitude with a vine density of around 7,000 vines per hectare — more than double the average South African vineyard — and very low-yielding old vines.
Taste Profile: Golden colour. An elegant bouquet of ripe pear, kumquat and zesty citrus with a hint of sweet exotic spice. The dry, mineral-driven palate offers opulent layers of pear, candied lemon citrus and succulent tropical fruit, with a textured mouthfeel, mouth-watering acidity and a lingering mineral finish.
Winemaking Process: Hand-harvested in two passes to balance ripeness across the block. Grapes rest on skins overnight before pressing; 70% of the juice is inoculated with a selected yeast strain while the remaining 30% undergoes wild fermentation. Matures in mostly older French oak barrels on primary lees, with regular bâtonnage for added complexity.
Winemaker: Old Road Wine Co. opened its doors in Franschhoek in December 2018, backed by an investor group led by Tim Hutchinson and built around the valley's Old Vine Project — bottling grapes from vines many other producers would have long since pulled out. Head winemaker Ryan Puttick, who grew up on a crop farm near Hartswater in the Northern Cape, leads both Old Road and its sister label Franschhoek Cellar, drawn to how a bottle of old-vine wine can carry a farm's whole history in a single glass.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
