Luddite Shiraz 2020
Named for a winemaker's belief that technology will never replace passion.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Shiraz, from the Old and Young blocks on Luddite's dry-farmed, organic vineyards on the eastern slopes of the Houw Hoek Mountains, Bot River, Western Cape, South Africa.
Taste Profile: An incredibly dark plum colour with lighter purple tones at the edges. The bouquet is a medley of flowers, sweet dark fruit, cinnamon and a touch of vanilla. Bold and dry on the palate, with a fresh tannin grip and bright acidity, showing juicy dark plum and blackberry fruit layered with pepper, vanilla and cloves through a long, decadent finish.
Winemaking Process: The Old and Young blocks are vinified and matured separately, only combined in the final blend one month before bottling. Some open fermenters see up to 30% whole-bunch stalk inclusion. A portion of the wine ferments in tank, spending 5 weeks on skins before pressing and racking to barrel; the rest ferments in barrel, using 32% new oak up to 4th fill, mostly French. The final blend ages 2 years in barrel before bottling.
Winemaker: Niels and Penny Verburg founded Luddite in 1999 after meeting at agricultural college, while Niels was still winemaker at nearby Beaumont, with the express goal of making world-class Shiraz on the slopes outside Bot River. True to the Luddite name, the Verburgs favour a lo-fi, minimal-intervention approach to farming and winemaking, guided by the belief that "technology and mechanization will never be a substitute for passion." Penny tends the vineyards while Niels runs the cellar, and their daughter Alice has since joined the winemaking side of the business.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
