Description

Donnafugata Dea Vulcano Etna Rosso DOC 2020

Donnafugata Dea Vulcano Etna Rosso is a fragrant and pleasant red from the slopes of Europe's highest active volcano. Light ruby red colour. Refined and fragrant bouquet with notes of wild strawberry, cherry, violets and slight hints of aromatic herbs and spices. Fresh and soft palate with well-integrated tannins. Closes in a balanced and juicy finish.

Ageing potential: 5+ years.

Nerello Mascalese with a small percentage of Nerello Cappuccio. The fruit for this wine comes from Donnafugata’s vineyards on the northern slope of Etna, between 730–750 metres above sea level. The vineyards are bordered by terraces and dry lava stone walls (UNESCO World Heritage Site), alternating the espalier training system with the Etna sapling. The area is characterised by little rainfall and cool, windy summers, which combine to produce healthy grapes. The soils are sandy and of volcanic origin, which makes them deep and rich in minerals.

Manual harvest in crates with careful selection of the grapes in the vineyard. Further selection of the bunches on a vibrating table upon arrival at the cellar, and subsequent selection of the grapes thanks to a latest generation destemmer. Fermentation in steel with maceration on skins for 8–10 days at a temperature of 25°C. Ages for 12 months in concrete vats and partially in French oak (second and third passage barriques). Lastly, 10 months of refinement in bottle for being released to the market.
