The winery is currently managed by third generation grower/winemaker, Hans-Joseph Becker. Hajo is a traditionalist versus many colleagues in the Rheingau region, and has no successor at the moment
His vineyard area totals 13 hectares, all in the Walkenberg area. (Walkenberg is a classified VDP.GROSSE LAGE® site) 75% is planted with Riesling and 25% Pinot Noir and is gradually increasing year on year.
Sticking to his guns methodologically and stylistically kept Hans-Josef Becker radical, even after the Rheingau eventually converted en masse to Riesling trocken. Becker persisted in the traditional practice of only bottling his young Rieslings immediately ahead of the next harvest, and in many instances he gave them even longer in cask. Fermentations here take place largely in pressure tanks, after which the young wines are racked into traditional Rheingau Stückfässer, where they remain on their fine lees until bottling. Viticulturally, too, Becker resisted both the trends that prevailed in his youth and subsequent fashions. That meant preserving old vines and, when replanting was unavoidable, spurning clones in deference to massal selections. It meant farming organically, though he never advertised it, at a time when the practice was almost unheard of among German winegrowers
In this way they achieve a fascinating harmony and even after decades they still look fresh and convincingly mature with great fruit. They remain highly sought after by world renown sommeliers and wine critics throughout the world. Becker’s wine is unlike any other producers in Rheingau. Annual bottle production of 45,000.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Sparburgunder (Pinot Noir) from the Rheingau, Germany. This bottling comes from the oldest vines in the Walkenberg, with an average age of 40 years or older
Taste Profile: Extremely deep, dark cherry. Sour cherry, black cherry, oppressive intensity, showing grandiose density, but ultra-fine. The mouth vibrates with the tension. The tension ranges from intense sour cherry to sweet cherry to a little blackberry. Brilliant minerals, great salt. Extremely alive. This is like a Pinot Noir from the high altitudes of Burgundy, almost a slim Corton, even in its darkness and with its dark cherry aromas with superb finesse
Winemaking Process: After fermentation in wooden barrels, Becker's Pinots remain in large old wooden barrels (no barriques) for two full years, the first small addition of sulfur after the completion of the biological acid fermentation (after one year) and the sulfur is set to a low value shortly before bottling. The incredible color yield and the finely polished, immense tannin and extract masses of the Pinot Noirs result not only from the organically cultivated vineyard and the rigid yield restrictions, but also from the mash fermentation in the high-pressure tank. At over four bar CO2 - pressure release in explosive form to achieve the cell rupture of the shells, known from diving sickness. After fermentation, storage on the mash in the pressure tank for up to three weeks. Pressing at low pressure and aging over 2 to 3 years in large wooden barrels until filling. Completely destemmed.
