Aegean Islands, Greece
The Aegean Islands in Greece are home to several small island wine regions, most notably Santorini. The climate in this region is hot and dry, with strong winds that help to keep the vines healthy. The volcanic soil on Santorini is unique and contributes to the distinctive flavors of the wines produced there.
Assyrtiko is the most famous grape variety in the region, and is known for producing dry, mineral-rich wines with high acidity. Santorini is particularly well-known for its Assyrtiko wines. These wines are crisp and refreshing, with flavors of lemon, grapefruit, and minerality. The volcanic soil of the island gives these wines a distinct character that cannot be found elsewhere.
In addition to Assyrtiko, Santorini also produces sweet white wines made from the Athiri grape variety. These wines are typically served as a dessert wine and have flavors of honey and dried fruit.
