J.B. Becker Wallufer Walkenberg Riesling Spätlese Trocken Alte Reben 2015 — 1.5L Magnum
Ten years in the bottle and just hitting its stride — old-vine Rheingau Riesling that defies everything you think you know about German wine.
The winery is currently run by third-generation grower and winemaker Hans-Joseph Becker, a traditionalist even by the standards of a region that prizes tradition. His 13 hectares sit entirely within the Walkenberg — a classified VDP.GROSSE LAGE® site — planted 75% to Riesling and 25% Pinot Noir, with the Riesling share gradually increasing year on year.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Riesling from the Walkenberg vineyard in Walluf, Rheingau, Germany — and not just any vines. The Alte Reben ("old vine") bottling is sourced exclusively from vines over 40 years of age, with the oldest reaching around 70. Walkenberg is a steep, south-facing site of exceptional concentration, Becker's largest and most important holding, farmed organically throughout. The 2015 vintage scored 93/100 across critics.
Taste Profile: This special old-vine bottling offers floral and herbal notes the regular Spätlese Trocken lacks, with an even more mineral and extremely long finish — a Rheingau Riesling built for decades of ageing. On the nose, tart citrus flirts with barely ripe apricot and peach, highlighted by lemon curd and lemon zest, with a limey quality that's sticky but fresh and gripping on the palate. The concentration from the old vines is wild, yet the wine stays more tense, more coiled, clearer and more incisive than its younger-vine counterpart. At a decade of age, expect the youthful tension to be softening into honeyed depth with the mineral backbone fully on show.
Winemaking Process: Becker ferments in pressurised tanks using wild yeasts, before racking the juice into traditional Rheingau Stückfässer for at least two years of barrel age before bottling. Only medium-bodied at just over 12.5% natural alcohol, but concentrated and compact, with a textural complexity that defies simple description. Since 2003, all wines are bottled under glass stopper to preserve freshness and ageing integrity.
Winemaker: Sticking to his guns methodologically and stylistically has kept Hans-Joseph Becker radical, even after the Rheingau eventually converted en masse to Riesling trocken. Becker persisted in the traditional practice of only bottling his young Rieslings immediately ahead of the next harvest, and in many instances gave them even longer in cask. Viticulturally too, he resisted both the trends of his youth and the fashions that followed — preserving old vines and, when replanting was unavoidable, choosing massal selections over clones. He farmed organically without ever advertising it, at a time when the practice was almost unheard of among German winegrowers. Decades on, the wines still look fresh and convincingly mature, remaining highly sought after by sommeliers and critics worldwide. Annual production runs to just 45,000 bottles, and Becker currently has no successor lined up.
