The name of the wine estate goes back to the marriage of grandparents Paula Meyer and Willibald Näkel in 1950. They cultivated an area of just 1.5 hectares, yet were able to make a name for themselves because Willibald’s production of dry red wines represented thoroughly pioneering work at the time where German wine was simply always sweet.
Werner Nakel took over the estate in the 1980s, and is considered one of the most important vintners in Germany. Today, the winery is run by 3rd generation Meike and Dörte (with their parents Werner and Claudia Näkel), who have embraced their family’s passion and skill for winemaking, with a fresh take on the River Ahr, Slate and Pinot Noir.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Fruhburgunder from Ahr, Germany. The vines are grown on slate-greywacke weathered rock
Frühburgunder is an ancient, independent grape variety and an early-ripening variant of Spätburgunder. Its extremely low yields nearly led it to be forgotten.
The secret of the Ahr wines is optimum microclimate created by its geological
conditions. The steep south-facing vineyards provide optimal exposure to the
sun. The soil there is rich in slate and greywacke, which warms up quickly and
an retains the sun's heat
Taste Profile: This Frühburgunder has dominate fruit flavours of raspberry, huckleberry and morello cherry. This dry red has elegant floral aromas, as well as hints of cacao bean. Subtle elderberry and spicy juniper aromas can be found not only on the nose but also on the palate. A full-bodied wine with round tannins and good depth
Winemaking Process: Old vines, meticulous vineyard management, consistent yield reduction, and gentle hand-harvesting form the basis of this wine. In the cellar, careful handling preserves the quality achieved in the vineyard and maintains the varietal character. The wine undergoes 18 days of maceration, followed by maturation and aging in used barriques for approximately 12 months.

Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
