Rufete
Rufete is often regarded as a "hidden gem" of Iberian viticulture, especially for those exploring Spain’s lesser-known indigenous grape varieties. It is increasingly used to create elegant and complex wines that reflect the mountainous terrain of Spain and Portugal.
Varietal Origin: Rufete is a red grape variety primarily found in the Sierra de Salamanca in Spain and parts of northern Portugal, particularly in the Douro Valley. It is believed to be of Iberian origin and has traditionally been used as a blending grape, though it’s gaining recognition for its potential in single-varietal wines.
Typical Taste Profile: Rufete wines typically exhibit a light to medium body with soft tannins. They tend to be aromatic, offering red fruit flavors such as wild strawberries, cherries, and raspberries, combined with floral hints like violets and subtle herbaceous or earthy tones. The wines are often fresh, with moderate acidity, making them approachable and versatile.
Regional Styles:
Spain (Sierra de Salamanca): In this region, Rufete is used to make elegant, fresh, and mineral-driven wines. Often grown on slate and granite soils, these wines have a notable mineral backbone with delicate fruit and floral aromas. They are typically lighter in style and meant to be enjoyed young, although some producers are experimenting with oak aging to add depth.
Portugal (Douro Valley): Rufete is often blended with other indigenous varieties, particularly in Port production. In dry table wines, it contributes to the blend’s complexity, adding softness, fruitiness, and aromatic lift. Single varietal Rufete wines are also emerging, highlighting the grape’s ability to produce balanced and refined wines.
