Dona Blanca (Moza Fresca, Valenciana)
Dona Blanca, also known as Moza Fresca or Valenciana in Portugal, is a white grape variety that thrives in the cool climates of northwestern Spain and the Douro region.
Varietal Origin: Originating in Spain, particularly in the regions of Galicia and Castilla y León, Dona Blanca is also cultivated in Portugal under different names.
Taste Profile: Dona Blanca wines are known for their crispness, good acidity, and refreshing character. They often exhibit citrus notes like lemon and grapefruit, along with herbal and floral aromas. The wines are typically light to medium-bodied, offering a zesty and lively taste experience.
Regional Styles: In Galicia, Dona Blanca is often blended with other local grape varieties like Godello and Treixadura, creating fresh and aromatic white wines that showcase the region's terroir. In Castilla y León, Dona Blanca is sometimes used to produce fortified wines similar to Sherry, known as "Vino de Sacedón" or "Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León." In Portugal's Douro region, where it is known as Moza Fresca or Valenciana, Dona Blanca is used in both still and fortified wines, contributing to the region's diverse wine portfolio.
