Gruner Veltliner

By far Austria's most important grape, it's a perfect sunny summer wine made in a lean, herbaceous, and peppery wines with mouth-watering acidity, explaining why it translates to "Green Wine of Veltlin".

TASTE PROFILE

Gruner Veltliner

Expect aromas of lime, starfruit, gooseberry, asparagus & gravel, essentially an exotic alternative to Sauvignon Blanc. It will have a signature tangy acidity that pops in your mouth, with quality Gruner finishing off with a delicate tingly aftertaste.

An ideal palate cleanser, think of sashimi or light meats like roast chicken when pairing this wine. It's one of the wines that pair up with vegetables like artichoke & asparagus, which are otherwise notoriously difficult to pair. Schnitzel is awesome.

WINEMAKING STYLES

As a wine that almost only comes out of Austria, it's better to talk about Gruner as 2 different styles that can be expected.

Light & zesty would be the typical style you would find. Pale green in color, it's meant to drink young with sharp acidity & notes of green pea & lime zest. Perfect as an ice cold afternoon drink.

Rich & nutty styles are not as popular, but it's an interesting style nonetheless. With Gruner's hallmark acidity, it will be richer but still with a tingly finish, rather than something smooth. Often labeled "Reserve", first cut grapes are usually barrel aged to produce this rich & textured wine, with layers of lemon, honey, nuts & a slight creamy finish.
