Rabigato
Rabigato, meaning "cat's tail" in Portuguese due to the long and thin shape of its bunches, is a white grape variety often overshadowed by more well-known grapes but is essential in some of Portugal’s finest wines.
Varietal Origin: Rabigato is a native grape variety from Portugal, predominantly grown in the Douro Valley and Trás-os-Montes regions. While not as widely recognized internationally as other Portuguese grapes, it plays a crucial role in the production of white wines and blends, especially in these mountainous areas.
Typical Taste Profile: Rabigato is known for its crisp acidity and minerality. Wines made from this grape often feature flavors of green apple, citrus, and stone fruit such as peach and apricot, along with subtle floral notes and a marked minerality that comes from the terroir of the Douro Valley. The wines tend to be fresh and vibrant with a clean, persistent finish.
Regional Styles:
Douro Valley (Portugal): Rabigato is frequently used in white blends, particularly in the production of Douro DOC white wines. It is often blended with other indigenous varieties like Viosinho and Gouveio to create balanced wines with good acidity and aging potential. These wines tend to be crisp, mineral-driven, and fresh, showcasing the grape's inherent acidity.
Trás-os-Montes (Portugal): In this lesser-known region, Rabigato is used both in blends and as a single varietal. The cooler climate of Trás-os-Montes enhances the grape’s acidity and minerality, producing wines that are slightly more floral and delicate compared to those from the warmer Douro region.
