Barbeito Malvasia Reserva Velha 10 Year Old (Sweet)

Grape Varietals & Region: Made exclusively from the Malvasia grape variety, grown in the volcanic soils of Madeira, Portugal. Grapes from various quality vineyards from São Jorge

Taste Profile: Bright gold color. Floral aromas, ripe citrus, honey and almonds. Lots of depth and well balanced, full and persistent spicy. Excellent as digestif, Christmas pudding, foie-gras, chocolate, crystallized fruits and cheese.

Winemaking Process: Barbeito Boal Old Reserve undergoes meticulous winemaking techniques to achieve its extraordinary quality.

Grapes were pressed in a continuous press. Arresting of fermentation takes place at the desired degree of sweetness by adding vinic alcohol (96%). The juice is then fermented and fortified with grape brandy, retaining a touch of natural sweetness. The wine is aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 10 years, allowing it to develop remarkable depth, complexity, and a rich bouquet of flavors.

Caramelized & Nutty Desserts

These wines are often aged oxidatively and show developed characteristics of rich caramel, cream and a range of nutty aromas. Sweetness levels can vary.

Many of these wines are made from dried grapes, and are often fortified or solera aged. Often viscous in texture, they classically have notes of almonds, coffee, and marmalade. Some styles may have a "cooked" tinge to it due to being aged in warm conditions

Fortification

Fortified wines are wines which have alcohol added to them, usually in the form of a neutral grape spirit like brandy. This was originally done to extend the longevity of wines, for the purpose of long journeys such as a the sailing routes of the East India Company

These styles are often sweeter as the fortification arrests fermentation early.
