Vinhos Barbeito is a family winery founded in 1946 by Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos. Over time, they have changed their philosophy from bulk export in the past, to today, where they focus on producing on producing the best quality Madeira.

Description

Barbeito Medium Sweet 3 Year Old

100% Tinta Negra. Grapes from various quality vineyards located in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and São Vicente. Grapes were pressed in a pneumatic press. Arresting of fermentation takes place at the desired degree of sweetness by adding vinic alcohol (96%).

Light gold colour. Hints of apricot jam, tropical fruit, honey and caramel. Very smooth wine on the palate. Well balanced finish between the sweetness and the freshness left by the acidity. Excellent as a digestif, with smoked ham, cheese and dessert.

This wine achieves its unique characteristics by the estufagem process. It is then matured in oak casks for up to 3 years before blended and bottled.

Fortification

Fortified wines are wines which have alcohol added to them, usually in the form of a neutral grape spirit like brandy. This was originally done to extend the longevity of wines, for the purpose of long journeys such as a the sailing routes of the East India Company

These styles are often sweeter as the fortification arrests fermentation early.
