Description
Lomond Belladonna SMV 2018
Lomond Belladonna is a savoury Shiraz blend from the southernmost tip of South Africa. Vibrant and rich ruby red colour. Opens with a juicy red fruit nose accompanied by ample doses of pepper and lavender floral notes. Silky smooth tannins create a luscious mouthfeel. Rich and intense flavours of dark chocolate, raspberries and red currant fill the palate before closing in a spicy finish.
Fun Fact: This single vineyard wine is named after a vulnerable listed species endemic to the Agulhas Region, Amarylis Belladonna.
79% Shiraz, 15% Mourvèdre and 6% Viognier. The fruit comes from a vineyard planted in north-west facing blocks on the lower reaches of the farm in Cape Agulhas. The vineyards are within view of the sea, in sandy, gravelly and highly weathered soils with a clay substructure. The vineyards of Lomond are surrounded by indigenous flora known as Fybos.
Hand-picking and hand-sorting of the varietals. The Syrah ferments dry in stainless steel tanks before transferring to barrels for ageing. The Mourvèdre ferments in open wooden casks, then goes through malolactic fermentation and ageing in 300 L French oak barrels. The Viognier spends the first third of fermentation in stainless steel tanks before transferring to old 300 L French oak barrels.
Ageing potential: Cellar up to 7 years.
