Cantina Lavis
The Cantina Lavis winery bears a name and logo that reflect its links with the land and its ancient wine-making traditions. Like the town it lies in, it takes its name from the Avisio River, cascading from the surrounding peaks with all the energy of the spectacular natural landscape that Vis, the Latin word for strength that forms part of that name, so aptly describes.
The logo takes inspiration from a decorative element that has always been present in the company and bears a highly symbolic value: a wooden bas-relief celebrating the founding of the winery in 1948 which represents the coats of arms of the municipalities of Lavis, Giovo and Meano, the very first protagonists in the association’s establishment. A timeless brand of great strength that puts the Winery and its founding values at the centre: cooperation, history and the bond with the territory.
The Lavis wine-makers cooperative traces its origins to 1850, when the Cembran family built the initial core of the current production unit. It was officially formed in 1948 by 14 independent wine-makers and grew in the years that followed, due partly to acquisitions of other producers, including mergers with the Salorno Cooperative of South Tyrol in 1969 and Cantina Sociale di Cembra in 2003.
The terrain of the Cantina La-Vis vineyards is a complex jumble of hills, hollows and steep slopes. Various grape varieties are cultivated on small plots of land. The traditional pergola system is used, supplemented by the espalier system.
Lying at altitudes of 200 to 800 metres, the vineyards are the source of variety and rich sensory experiences, with delicate white grapes growing on the upper slopes and robust, full-bodied reds at lower levels.
The vineyards grow 80% white grapes, among which Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Müller Thurgau prevail. The red grapes include Schiava, Pinot Nero, Merlot, Teroldego and Lagrein. The production area is comprised of vineyards located in Trentino and extending from the hills of Lavis, Sorni and Meano, with the characteristic terracing of the Valle di Cembra up to Isera in Vallagarina, as well as some plots of land in South Tyrol.
Each of our wine-growers must be fully aware of the context of the area where they grow, the factors that make it unique and best-suited to one variety or another, with the intention of producing wines that are an expression of their terroir of origin.Decisions about which varieties to grow, and on which plots, are based on the zoning project that was launched in the mid-eighties and is the key to La Vis wine quality. This project, summed up by the slogan “the right vine in the right place”, has made it possible to identify the best vine for each terrain based on a detailed study of the particular soil characteristics.
Their marked cooperation with our strongly motivated social base has given rise to important and generous wines which fully express themselves in an impervious and difficult territory.
One important aspect within this base is the Soil Map, a document stating the characteristics of the soil for which each terroir is distinguished.
The area map then uses different colours to outline the areas with the same mineralogical composition.
Sustainability
Cantina di La-Vis and Valle di Cembra are firmly committed to protecting the environment and the territory in which they operate. The wines of Cantina di La-Vis and Valle di Cembra represent a wine-making tradition that links nature to technology in a unique mountain setting.
Their production philosophy is guaranteed by their compliance with the Integrated Production System Protocol of the Province of Trento, which envisages a production system that uses every method and means of production and defence to minimise the use of synthetic chemicals and rationalise fertilisation, in full respect of the environmental and economic safeguarding principles.
