Description

Eikendal Vineyards Janina Unwooded Chardonnay 2020

Eikendal Vineyards Janina Unwooded Chardonnay is a truly unique approach. The bouquet opens with fresh lemon zest and sweet green apple aromas. The round palate exudes rich honey, sweet apple and lemon citrus flavours with a rich floral orange blossom twist. Delightful, flinty and lingering finish.

100% Chardonnay. 80% of the blend comes from Eikendal vineyards (clones 277, 95 and 96). These south-facing vineyards have decomposed granite soils and sit 170 metres above sea level in Stellenbosch. They have a maritime climate: the winters are wet and cold, in summer the heat is tempered by a cool Atlantic Ocean breeze in False Bay. These are the perfect conditions to produce premium Chardonnay. The remainder of the grapes (clone 277) come from the Elgin Valley. Four different blocks, three different clones and from two different regions – a truly unique approach.

After hand-picking and whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation begins at 15–18°C. A long, slow fermentation lasting 4–6 weeks in 900 litre plastic egg-shaped fermenters, stainless steel tanks and cement egg fermenters. Finally, the wine ages for 6 months on lees before blending and bottling.
Ageing potential: Enjoy now or within the next 3 years.
