Faiveley Mercurey Clos Rochette Monopole 2018
Pale yellow with emerald highlights. This wine is bursting with complex aromas and a fresh nose: green apple with hints of citrus, white florals reminiscent of acacia, lightly toasted hazelnuts, and faint warm cinnamon spices. Practically 1 ingredient away from an ice cream. A buttery, full mouthfeel with a clean mineral touch and dry, crisp finish harmonises to result in a beautifully elegant and delicious wine.
2018 in an early ripening vintage. Harvest began on the 27th of August in the Côte Chalonnaise with Mercurey and in te Côte de beaune with our « Clos des Cortons Faiveley » Grand Cru. The harvests came to a close on the 15th of September. The vines displayed excellent health conditions, the clusters were dense and perfectly ripe. 2018 is a very classic vintage that can be enjoyed in its youth and is already drinking beautifully.
The grapes are manually harvested and sorted, and the musts are extracted using a pneumatic press before being settled. The alcoholic fermentation lasts 4 weeks and takes place for a proportion of the musts (55%) in French oak barrels, 25% of which are new oak. The ageing period lasts 16 months with regular stirring whilst the rest of the blend is aged in vats. This allows the wine to develop delicate woody notes whilst conserving its freshness and distinctive character.
The Clos Rochette vineyard is located in the heart of the Mercurey appellation, next to Faiveley’s La Framboisière, and has been one of the Domaine’s Monopoles since 1933. The parcel has a South-East exposition and compact clay-limestone soils, which are hard to plough and scattered with small rocks.
AWARDS & ACCOLADES
“Offering up a pretty bouquet of yellow apples, pear and fresh peach, the 2018 Mercurey Blanc Clos Rochette is medium-bodied, elegantly textural and fine-boned, with a delicate core of fruit, lively acids and a nicely defined finish. This is a pretty, charming white that’s already drinking well.
Very flinty and original, rather than fruity, for a modestly priced white Burgundy. This is sleek and racy with a cascade of minerals at the crisp finish. Very food-friendly. Drink or hold.”
“A lean version, displaying apple, lemon cake and baking spice flavors. Compact, yet balanced and vibrant, presenting a mix of fruit and spicy oak on the long finish. Drinking now through 2023. 400 cases imported.”
