Description
Donnafugata Sul Vulcano Etna Rosso DOC 2017
DONNAFUGATA produces a range of eclectic and consistent wines distinguished by pleasantness and complexity. Every wine is crafted with respect for the environment to represent an innovative and forward thinking Sicily.
Sul Vulcano is a surprising vulcanic red born 750 metres above sea level on the large hillsides of Etna. The highest active volcano in Europe and UNESCO Heritage site since 2013. These volcanic eruptions now produce what is known in Sicilian dialect as “sciara”. An accumulation of lava that throughout the centuries create the fertile cultivatable soils on the slopes of the volcano. From this springs the Nerello Mascalese, a red grape variety native to Sicily that thrives especially on Mount Etna.
The 18 hectares of Donnafugata vineyards on the north side of the volcano are characterised by a lower average of rainfall. This lava soil of sandy texture is deep, rich in minerals and allows a strong root growth.
Nerello Mascalese with a small amount of Nerello Cappuccio. Manual harvesting of grapes into crates with careful selection of the grapes in the vineyard. Selection on a vibrating table, followed by grape selection thanks to a latest generation destemmer. Fermentation in stainless steel with maceration on the skins for 8–10 days at a temperature of 25°C. Ageing partly in tanks and partly in French oak (second and third passage barriques) for 14 months and then at least 7 months in bottle before release.
Light ruby red colour. Sul Vulcano offers notes of wild strawberries and red currant. Flowery scents along with delicate spicy nuances of cinnamon and nutmeg. The palate is soft and enveloping, with good freshness and harmonious tannins. Long and balanced on the finish.
