Description
Casa Rojo Minami 2016
Rich, intense and fruity. Minami is the perfect companion for that special platter of aged cheeses at your next get together with family or friends.
Deep ruby-purple hue. Bold, powerful and wonderfully smooth. The bouquet is abound with dark fruits of blackberry, cassis and blueberry, with strong layers of coffee and chocolate. The palate has a great structure and complexity, with velvety tannins and a great acidic backbone to keep it fresh for years to come.
The wine’s name ‘minami’ is a Japanese word meaning ‘south’, or ‘heading south’. An appropriate name considering the location of the winery and the vineyards (on the far south of the town of Jumilla) chosen to produce Minami. Another interpretation of ‘minami’ is the concept of ‘regeneration’ or ‘resurgence’. In recent years, farmers in the rural communities of La Raja and La Zarza began ripping out their vines in order to replace them with fruit and almond trees. But thanks to the interest shown by Casa Rojo in maintaining Monastrell production, several agriculturalists have now abandoned this practice and continue grape cultivation.
A 100% Syrah from a unique vineyard called “Los Guardiola”. The vineyard is located 900 meters above the Sierra del Carche, in the northern part of the La Raja Valley. Planted in 1980, the plot is trellised and north facing with about 9,000 strains of which Casa Rojo obtains a kilo per strain of yield due to green pruning and low yield per plant. Stony and clayey soil, with a large terroir structure. Manual harvest in the second half of September for optimal stretches of maturation. A first selection occurs in the field, second by bunch and third by grain in the cellar. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are drained for the production of a few litres of rosé and greater concentration. The grains of grapes enter stainless steel tanks by gravity, where they ferment at 29°C for 10 days following a maceration on skins and seeds for a month. Ageing occurs partly in New French oak barrels of 240 L for 24 months and another part goes to clay amphorae of 800 litres. The wine is assembled and rests for 5 months before bottling and refinement in cellars until it reaches perfection.
