Description

Cantine San Marzano Sessantani Primitivo di Manduria 2018

Grape varietal & region: In 1962, 19 winemakers from the Italian region of San Marzano came together to found the 'Cantina San Marzano'. Over the years, this cooperative has grown to the point of attracting 1200 wine producers who, using modern equipment and advanced technology, deliver elegant labels with the utmost respect for Puglia's wine traditions. The winery is at the heart of the Primitivo di Manduria, a strip of land suspended between two seas, where vines and flower boxes grow side by side in a blanket of red earth.

This wine is made from the Primitivo grape variety, sourced from very old vineyards in the San Marzano and Sava areas of Italy. The vineyards have finely textured residual red soil with a calcareous subsoil and sparse rocky outcrops, and are home to head-trained bush vines that are at least sixty years old.

Taste profile: Ruby red color with fruity notes of plum and cherry jam, and hints of tobacco and spice. It has a full-bodied taste with soft and rich tannins, and finishes with notes of cocoa, coffee and vanilla.

Winemaking process: The grapes are hand-harvested in the second half of September, and maceration takes place for 18 days on 80% of the mass and for 25 days on 20%, with native yeasts selected in the vineyard. The wine is aged in French and American oak barriques for 12 months.
