Description

Blankbottle General J 2022

This is winemaker Pieter Walser's wacky take on his own Beaujolais Nouveau, although not made from Gamay, but rather a blend of various varietals from all over South Africa.

Grape Varietals & Region: Winemaker Pieter Walser has put his own spin on the traditional Beaujolais Nouveau by using a blend of Grenache, Cinsault, and Pinot Noir from different vineyards across Breedekloof, Wellington, Stellenbosch, and Elgin.

Taste Profile: For natural wine enthusiasts, this wine is a must-try. Upon opening, it exhibits a slightly reductive nose with hints of raspberry, blackcurrant fruit and leaf, charcoal, and cola. It is recommended to serve this wine chilled to fully appreciate its unique character.

Winemaking Process: The grapes were carefully selected and cooled overnight to 4 degrees Celsius before being partly destemmed and partly left as whole bunches to ferment spontaneously in open top fermenters. The wine was left on the skins for three weeks before being pressed into older French oak barrels, where it aged for a month before being blended and bottled. Like Beaujolais Nouveau, this wine was released just two months after harvest.
