Tuscany is a central Italian region beamming with heavy hitters. Sangiovese based red wines are synonymous with Tuscany, covering popular styles & sub regions like Brunello, Chianti, Montelpulciano, and more. Super Tuscans have become another big name from the region with popular names like Sassicaia, Ornellaia being heavily sought after internationally.
What makes the Tuscany region so interesting & diverse is the various microclimates & sub-regions. The temperate coastal zone features sandy and gravel soil, while warmer, drier hilly inland areas are rich in clay and marl deposits. Variation in altitude and diurnal temperatures help maintain the balance of sugars, acidity, and aromatics in the grapes.
The major regions / styles include:
- Brunello di Montalcino: Candied cherry, licorice, and hazelnut define a silky palate, along with refined tannins and aromas of toasted oak and leather. One of Italy's most ageworthy wines, it's made with 100% Sangiovese, and is aged for at least 4 years before release following strict DOCG rules. Rosso di Montalcino is a lighter, younger version.
- Super Tuscan: Ripe cherry, ripe plum, and violets on the palate with the scent of subtle baking spice and plum. Bolgheri is the heartland of the Super Tuscan style, where the coastal region & non-native grape varietals will give you beautiful wines despite the lack of classification
- Chianti: Find notes of freshly baked pie crust, black cherry, and black raspberry, with dusty tannins. Note that Chianti Classico is a sub-region within Chianti, with stricter appellation rules regarding varietal & ageing process, and carry a refreshing acidity due to a cooler microclimate
- Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: Hints of herbaceous and earthy notes along with bing cherry, plum, and violets. Coming from the hills around Montepulciano, these delightful wines are for easy drinking, softer & less rigid but with similar characteristics to Chianti Riservas
